Apa itu Telling the Time?

Telling the time artinya "menyebutkan waktu". Dalam Bahasa Inggris, ada dua gaya atau cara menyebutkan waktu, yaitu:

  1. British Style (Gaya British / Inggris)

  2. American Style (Gaya Amerika)

Contoh pertanyaan umum untuk menanyakan waktu:

  • What time is it? (British)

  • What is the time? (American)

Keduanya memiliki arti yang sama, yaitu: Jam berapa sekarang?


CARA MEMBACA JAM DALAM BAHASA INGGRIS

  1. Jam Tepat

    • 5.00 → It is five o'clock

    • 12.00 (siang) → It is twelve o'clock / It is midday / It is noon

    • 12.00 (malam) → It is twelve o'clock / It is midnight

  2. Menit Lewat (Past)
    Digunakan ketika menitnya kurang dari 30.

Contoh:

  • 6.05 → It is five past six

  • 7.10 → It is ten past seven

  • 8.15 → It is a quarter past eight

  • 9.20 → It is twenty past nine

  • 10.25 → It is twenty five past ten

  • 11.30 → It is half past eleven

  1. Menit Menuju (To)
    Digunakan ketika menitnya lebih dari 30, artinya menuju ke jam berikutnya.

Contoh:

  • 12.35 → It is twenty five to one

  • 1.40 → It is twenty to two

  • 2.45 → It is a quarter to three

  • 3.50 → It is ten to four

  • 4.55 → It is five to five

  1. Gaya Amerika
    Biasanya langsung menyebut angka jam dan menit, seperti:

  • 6.05 → It is six oh five

  • 8.15 → It is eight fifteen

  • 12.35 → It is twelve thirty five

  • 3.50 → It is three fifty

  • 10.51 → It is ten fifty one


PENGGUNAAN AM dan PM

Bahasa Inggris menggunakan dua istilah utama untuk menunjukkan waktu siang dan malam:

  1. AM (Ante Meridiem)
    Digunakan untuk waktu dari jam 12 malam sampai jam 11.59 siang.
    Contoh:

  • 7.00 AM → seven o'clock in the morning

  • 9.30 AM → nine thirty in the morning

  1. PM (Post Meridiem)
    Digunakan untuk waktu dari jam 12 siang sampai jam 11.59 malam.
    Contoh:

  • 1.00 PM → one o'clock in the afternoon

  • 7.00 PM → seven o'clock in the evening

Catatan:
Jika waktu sudah jelas (misalnya, makan malam), kita tidak perlu menggunakan AM atau PM.

Contoh:

  • Question: What time do you have dinner?

  • Answer: At seven o'clock


CONTOH KALIMAT

  • I wake up at six o'clock in the morning.

  • School starts at seven thirty AM.

  • We have lunch at twelve o'clock.

  • I study English at four fifteen PM.

  • I sleep at nine o'clock at night.

A. Jawaban:

  1. It is ten past six

  2. It is a quarter past nine

  3. It is half past eleven

  4. It is twenty to two

  5. It is five to five

  6. It is a quarter to four

  7. It is five past eight

  8. It is twenty five past two

  9. It is seven o'clock

  10. It is ten to eleven

B. Jawaban bebas (Contoh):

  1. At seven o'clock

  2. At six thirty

  3. At nine o'clock

  4. At four fifteen

  5. At five o'clock
